Fragile Recovery

“You are neither right nor wrong because people agree with you.” – Benjamin Graham
As discussed in the latest weekly outlook video we are hovering around key levels across the board. The next ‘healthy move’ seems to be fairly clear on the charts but it’s still struggling to get real traction. Equities looked very fragile yesterday but the ‘magical’ bid in tech stocks saved the day. We suspect that action could have turned very ugly across the board had it not been for the Nasdaq holding.
Here are some of the key charts we’ll be discussing and focusing on today:

Key Drivers

“A market is the combined behavior of thousands of people responding to information, misinformation and whim.” – Kenneth Chang

Getting Interesting

Bulls Make Money, Bears Make Money, Pigs Get Slaughtered
Quick post today > focus is on how we trade into the end of the day and especially on Monday if markets close heavy. Moves are in play and nothing has changed, so please go back to the posts we put out earlier in the week if you are looking for a bit more clarity on what is playing out.

Super Thursday

“The only way out is through.” – Carl Jung
We are looking forwards to more action into the end of the week. If you are an active 50Scouts member: keep an eye on your inbox for a free pass to Friday’s daily webinar session (make sure to check your spam folder too), we’ll have plenty to discuss and review. 😉
As much as things have stabilized in the US, foreign markets are still struggling. We recently reviewed DAX and FTSE in detail but take a look at some of these other charts…
Make sure you keep on watching the bonds. As we have been warning repeatedly, still no sustained bounce in sight and all the other asset classes will be forced to pay attention and adjust…
In terms of equities, it’s all about recent lows vs the highs we made yesterday. If those highs give, then we would expect another push back towards all time highs (as discussed in our recent morning call). Don’t forget to watch intraday action on Boeing and Amazon for clues. Here is the NQ chart to give you an idea of the dynamics (ES and YM are very similar and we’ll be redrawing and discussing those live today). If you had to focus on one, ES is clearly the most technical and purest for now…

Friday Action

“Markets can remain irrational longer than you can remain solvent.” – John Maynard Keynes
As we have been repeatedly highlighting; bonds are trading very heavy and as long as the breaks hold, expectations are for more downside momo… there is only so long markets can go ignoring this key development… caution out there and don’t forget to keep an eye on the tech names into NY open.

Situation Normal

“Bull markets are born on pessimism, grow on skepticism, mature on optimism and die on euphoria.” – Sir John Templeton
Remember that we have all the big tech names reporting in this Wednesday/Thursday window. As discussed in out latest outlook video, we have to get through this window of time and see how the market closes the week post these earnings.
No change to our note earlier in the week; keep an eye on bonds and it’s a good time to see some profit taking on stretched usd and crude positions.
Here is a chart of Amazon > not too shabby on the year 😉 As you can imagine, we’re itching to play for a healthy move / back to reality…

VIX Waking Up

“Strategy without tactics is the slowest route to victory. Tactics without strategy is the noise before defeat.” – Sun Tzu
As discussed in out latest outlook video, we expect a very interesting and volatile week with the SOTU address, FOMC, Key earnings and NFP and btw, don’t forget the Super Blue Blood Moon coming on January 31st too 😉
Make sure you keep up with all of the latest charts posted on our twitter feed. Again, no change to the base case > healthy correction on the usd with a bit of firming, bonds continue to stay heavy and equities slowly come into center stage with a healthy retracement as Crude fights for the next move at that key weekly level that if lost, could start and ugly unwind of stretched longs. In terms on single stock names, all eyes on Apple and Boeing.
Remember that recent moves across the board have had a very good run. It’s never a good idea to stubbornly fight flows and especially not into the end of the month if they get some sustained traction.

On the Radar

“You can never make the same mistake twice because the second time you make it, it’s not a mistake, it’s a choice.” – Steven Denn
Luckily yesterday was not disappointing. As you can expect, it’s all about follow-through now. We’ll also have to see if indeed, as per recent reports, pensions will need to re-balance through selling an unusually high $12 billion of U.S. equities.
Keep inn mind that we still have a lot of headline risk from Davos today. Here are some of the key charts we will be reviewing in detail during our webinar:

Chart of the Day

“The market itself determines the relative importance of all factors more accurately than any speculator can hope to interpret them.” – Don Guyon
All eyes will be on President Trump in Davos and the ECB today. The bigger picture remains in tact > latest weekly outlook video.
As we discussed yesterday in our morning call, looks like the BTD crowd is still out in full force but the velocity of the down moves remains very telling. On the single stock side, as we have been posting on twitter, we are focused on the action in Apple.
Don’t forget to keep an eye on ZBs and ZNs > they are still hovering just above key structural supports.
Fingers crossed for an interesting day with plenty of opportunity across the board 😉
